What 125 days of scheduling taught us at Derudder Cleaning

FieldGenius retrospectively rescheduled the same 125-day period at Derudder Cleaning. Read what was compared and what this practical study shows.

Completing more jobs without immediately hiring another planner or adding vehicles to the fleet is an important question for many field service organisations. A field study at Derudder Cleaning shows how we examined that potential.

For 125 days, the planning team at Derudder Cleaning created every schedule manually. Afterwards, we asked FieldGenius to plan that exact same period again.

FieldGenius received no prior knowledge of the decisions made by the planners. It calculated a schedule proposal from the same data and constraints.

The comparison showed that FieldGenius could build a usable alternative schedule proposal for this dataset. On more complex days, differences in capacity use became more visible.

Comparing 125 days of manual and AI scheduling

Evaluating a scheduling solution based on a handful of quiet working days tells us very little. The real challenge begins when circumstances change and planners need to make continuous adjustments.

That is why we analysed a period of 125 days. It included both relatively quiet moments and busy days filled with changes, exceptions and dependencies.

On quiet days, FieldGenius performed at least as well as the manually created schedules. On demanding days, the difference became more apparent.

On more complex days, the effect of calculating more possible combinations became clearer.

This matters because those are precisely the moments when planning teams experience the most pressure. An urgent intervention, an unexpected absence or a change in priorities can make a carefully prepared schedule outdated within minutes.

FieldGenius processes the new situation, recalculates the available options and proposes a new, feasible and efficient schedule.

What this comparison does and does not show

This field study compares two schedules for the same historical period within one organisation. It therefore provides insight into this specific situation, but it is not a general guarantee for every schedule or organisation.

Experienced planners understand their organisation, employees and daily operations. Their knowledge remains extremely valuable. At the same time, it is difficult for a person to continuously assess every possible combination, restriction and consequence.

FieldGenius can process this large amount of information in a short time. The platform compares different options and searches for a schedule that best matches the organisation’s objectives and constraints.

These may include:

When more factors are involved, calculating additional possible combinations can be useful.

The planner remains in control

FieldGenius was not developed to make planners obsolete. The platform takes over much of the intensive puzzle-solving and quickly gives planners a strong schedule to work with.

This creates more time for tasks where human experience continues to matter. Planners can focus on exceptions, communication with customers and employees and situations that require additional judgement.

The combination of calculation and human expertise is central.

The planner defines the rules, conditions and priorities. FieldGenius processes that information and calculates an efficient schedule. When circumstances change, the platform can quickly reschedule without forcing the planner to rebuild the entire puzzle manually.

This reduces pressure on the planning department and makes the organisation less dependent on time-consuming manual work.

Insight into the use of existing capacity

The comparison showed how employees, vehicles and available working hours could be deployed differently across the same historical period. The comparison between manual planning and AI-generated proposals clearly identified underutilised capacity, providing a data-driven foundation for fleet optimization.

FieldGenius helps organisations get more from their existing capacity:

The exact improvement will naturally vary between organisations. It depends on factors such as the current schedule, team size, operating region, job types and business-specific constraints.

For this historical period, the comparison shows where the two schedules used available capacity differently.

Built for complex scheduling

A simple schedule can often be handled with a simple solution. FieldGenius was created for organisations where reality is constantly changing.

Additional employees, new teams, urgent interventions, unexpected absences and shifting priorities make scheduling increasingly complex. Manual planning then requires more time and makes it harder to use all available capacity effectively.

That is precisely where FieldGenius demonstrates its strength.

The platform combines the organisation’s rules and priorities with up-to-date information about employees, vehicles, assignments and availability. The result is a schedule that is not only efficient on paper but also remains realistic and executable in practice.

What could AI unlock in your schedule?

Every organisation has its own scheduling puzzle. That is why we are happy to demonstrate FieldGenius using your specific situation.

We can prepare a personalised demonstration using your own data. This shows where improvements in your schedule may be possible.

You will not have to figure it out alone. Our team supports the entire implementation process, from the initial analysis to launch. This allows your organisation to start using AI-powered scheduling effectively from day one.
